HOW TOXINS AFFECT YOUR HORMONES
Have you wondered why there are so many men out there with Low Testosterone?
Have you noticed that more women have PCOS now than ever before?
Are you aware that children are experiencing puberty earlier than ever?
Did you know that low thyroid function, hypothyroidism, is becoming more common than ever before?
It is not a coincidence that there is more hormonal imbalance than ever before. The toxins in our homes and environment have multiplied exponentially. We drink, eat, breathe, and touch them every day. While a few of the obvious offenders have already been outlawed, thousands more still prevail.
Bisphenol A, or BPA, is the classic case of endocrine disruption. It was originally studied as an Estrogen-like chemical that would improve birth outcomes (less miscarriages, less early deliveries, and improved menstrual cramps). However, BPA got pushed aside when DiEthylStilbestrol (DES) was created.
DES was a much more powerful Estrogen-like compound, so it was used heavily. Millions of people were prescribed this drug from 1940 to 1971. By the 1970’s, multiple cancers were being traced to DES, and it was quickly banned as a pharmaceutical. We were even taught in medical school that women who received DES needed special cancer surveillance.
After BPA fell out of favor with the medical world, it was discovered that BPA has amazing usages in plastics. It was clear, soft, and durable. The plastic companies put it in everything. You drank from BPA bottles as an infant, chewed on BPA in teething rings as a baby, played with BPA toys as a child, you drank from BPA water bottles as an adult, you eat food from BPA in cans, and you eat on BPA plastic plates. Needless to say, all of us have been and continue to be exposed to BPA.
Because of the steady influx of BPA, an estrogen-like compound, into our bodies, our own hormones get confused. In women, BPA causes progesterone to lower and estrogen to rise. This is called PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and Estrogen Dominance. In men, elevated levels of estrogen tell the brain to stop making testosterone.
BPA is just one of the many toxins that disrupt and mimic our own hormones. How many others are out there that you don’t know about?
